Last Fall, the City of New London contacted FRESH to collaborate on the creation of a community garden at McDonald Park. First, we sought local opinions on the matter. We surveyed 121 residents in the vicinity on what they need and want from a local park. Then we met with them at the AME Zion Church.
What a success! After breaking bread and getting to know each other, FRESH presented the survey results to the community and we discussed our reactions to the results. Then we focused on the collaborative design process by envisioning a future for McDonald Park. We ended the meeting with three working designs and a community design committee tasked with refining these designs to bring back to the whole group. ¡Dale!
Conn College design students helped the committee refine their designs and prepare to present to the group. Votes were cast, and ground was broken this Spring. Currently, McDonald Park hosts 14 community gardeners, 9 FRESH beds, a snacking garden, an edible border of native fruit trees and shrubs, and a dig pit for the young kids. More recreation options are being explored.
