The Urban Farm and Education Center is FRESH’s main Community Garden site.

It hosts 60 community garden beds, rented to 46 New London families, at a sliding scale low-cost. FRESH youth, staff and volunteers farm an additional 100 beds together. This community garden is located on a city owned parcel that was a dilapidated handball court when the city granted FRESH access to development. With State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection grants, local fundraising, and a ton of volunteer labor FRESH built all the components of this urban oasis over the next few years. The hoop house, pavilion, pizza oven, garden beds amidst wood chip paths, the children’s wild play space, fruit trees, fences for security and aesthetics, all of this was built atop a derelict asphalt slab.

Currently, we estimate that gardeners are able to grow an average of 50lbs of food in each bed.

If you would like a bed for the next growing season,
