We are Hiring a Community Organizer!
FRESH New London is entering into an exciting partnership with the Health Improvement Collaborative (HIC) of Southeastern Connecticut to hire a full time Community Organizer. This position will bridge the organizations, working to further engage local residents in the HICs mission to address racism as a public health issue as well as FRESH’s work to connect communities to local food system change. There will also be times where the project objectives and actions overlap.

Our core values include: Cultural appreciation; Racial Equity; Reallocation of resources; Environmental preservation; Sustainability of people and planet; People over profit ; Democratic decision making; Accountability; No blame or shame for individual choices; Diversity across demographics Health Improvement Collaborative of Southeastern CT (HIC) The Health Improvement Collaborative of Southeastern Connecticut (HIC) is a partnership of Ledge Light Health District, L+M Hospital, higher education and numerous health providers, social services, nonprofits and community based organizations. The HIC uses data to identify, prioritize and address the barriers to health and wellness for residents in Southeastern Connecticut. Members of the HIC understand the impact that societal factors and systems of oppression have on health. We recognize that there is a misperception of people in poor health- that they don’t take responsibility for their own wellbeing and that this narrative is simply false. The HIC is currently focused on highlighting and posing solutions to racism as a public health issue for our upcoming work. Overview: The Community Organizer will assist our organizations in meeting the following goals.
Work with residents to build power within FRESH’s organizational structure and an active voice on the HIC. Ensure that both organizations are accountable to resident voice within programs, projects, administrative policy and strategic planning. Assist FRESH and the HIC in being responsive to the needs of our diverse community.
Build a base of residents to work with FRESH and/or the HIC to advocate for local, regional and state systems change initiatives that build health equity.
Assist FRESH and the HIC to build a collective understanding among members and stakeholders of systemic racism and its impacts on residents of Southeastern CT.
For FRESH New London
Build and maintain relationships with current FRESH members, with a focus on community gardeners, youth (past and present), CSA members and neighbors of FRESH projects. Employ organizing techniques like one on ones, door knocking, surveying and others to gain a deep understanding of FRESH’s culture, our impact and ways we can better support members to:
Grow their own culturally relevant food;
Access and enjoy FRESH grown food;
Participate in FRESH strategic planning;
Participate in local policy initiatives that support food justice.
Create strong communication pathways among members and FRESH staff/Advisory Board. Be an active advocate for community voice within FRESH staff meetings, programs and community spaces.
Work with Youth Crew, Junior Staff and other youth program staff to ensure that all organizing and policy work integrates youth voice and is bridged across FRESH membership. Train young people in door knocking, issue development and campaigning as suited.
For HIC/FRESH partnership
Plan regular virtual or in-person events to engage members/New London residents with a focus on enhancing our capacity to address racism as a public health issue.
Work with residents and stakeholders to identify, assess and recommend improvements for local, state and regional policies related to health equity. Specifically with FRESH New London, review local Zoning codes and other City of New London policies related to enhancing urban agriculture and public green space.
Work with HIC members to identify, and pursue community engagement opportunities in the Greater New London area
Network and coordinate with outreach, community engagement and community health worker staff of HIC member organizations.
Participate in meetings related to the Health Enhancement Communities project and related work.
Provide updates to HIC members on any new or emerging social justice and/or community health issues encountered as part of engagement work.
Work with community members to name, frame, and work with the HIC to dismantle structural racism.
Bi-lingual fluency in Spanish and English or Haitian Creole and English.
Experience in communities with racial, cultural, age and income diversity.
Passion for racial and social justice.
Understanding of historical systemic racism and the impacts on communities of color.
Experience with grassroots organizing: base building, issue development and/or policy change is strongly recommended.
Proven ability to work independently.
Enthusiasm for working in groups and with coalitions.
Record of accomplishments and accountability.
Appreciation for and connection with New London.
A flexible schedule; Weekend and night availability is required for this position. (Childcare may be available for night and weekend events).
Passion for gardening, cooking and/or local food systems is preferred.
